The online bibliographic reference management tool – “EndNote Web”

EndNote Web

Since last March, b-on has been responsible for managing the Web of Knowledge – WoK (until then the responsibility of the recently extinct Science and Higher Education Observatory – OCES).
Now, Thomson (publisher responsible for making WoK available) informed us that it has now made a new tool – EndNote Web – available free of charge to all b-on members with access to the Web of Knowledge.
This document ( EndNote_Web_b-on.pdf ) serves, therefore, to present some of the main features of this new tool, allowing b-on members not only to gather a set of useful information regarding EndNote Web, but above all, to be in a position to to be able to compare with other similar tools available on the market (EndNote and RefWorks).

EndNote Web – features

EndNote Web allows you to organize bibliographic references and create bibliographies, however, it has some differences/limitations compared to the commercial version of EndNote Local that must be taken into account.
The great advantage of using EndNote Web is the sharing of references in research projects where participants are geographically dispersed, however, this sharing of folders only works as a complement to EndNote Local.
With “EndNote Web” users can:
- Perform searches on ISI Web of Knowledge, PubMed and catalogs from various libraries
- Import references from online bibliographic databases
- Edit reference details – add notes and keywords, modify any field
- Use Cite While You WriteTM in Microsoft Word (requires plug-in)
- Format articles on other processors using RTF files (rich text format)
- Simplify collaboration between users – share EndNote Web folders
- Save fonts to an EndNote Web library when browsing with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla® (plug-in required)

However, there are some limitations of this web version:
- Access to EndNote Web is not recognized by IP, requiring registration to assign a username and password
- To access other databases through EndNote Web, users also need a username and password requested individually from each publisher/database. Therefore, different keywords will be needed for each user.
- Integration with Word is done using a plug-in installed in the browser, a situation that deteriorates performance.
- In EndNote Web you can only store 10,000 references (on site it is unlimited).
- It is not possible to create new formatting styles, so you can exclude the use of NP405 from the outset, among others that are not available or are incorrectly formatted
- Searches cannot be saved. This situation makes it difficult for researchers to use.
- Term lists cannot be used. This tool allows you to reduce errors in author entries, journal names, etc.
- The titles of periodicals and articles cannot be abbreviated for use in integration with Word.
- Images, formulas or files cannot be associated with references.
- If you do not have a network, or if the Thomson website is “down”, you will not have access to the EndNote library.

Final considerations

Recognizing the need to publicize this new tool, we could not, however, fail to highlight a series of features of this Web version, so that b-on members can consciously decide whether or not to maintain other tools that they currently subscribe to. or consider subscribing.
