ESSNorteCVP Eco-Schools Program

ESSNorteCVP joined the Eco-Schools Program in March 2021, and the work of the academic community that contributes to greater sustainability of the daily life of the School and the community in which it operates was recognized by the European Blue Flag Association (ABAE), with approval of the candidacy for the first Green Flag Award .
The Eco-Escolas program is an international program of the “ Foundation for Environmental Education ”, developed in Portugal since 1996 by ABAE, aims to actively promote changes in behavior and attitudes in the academic and local community, through Environmental Education for Sustainable Development and Citizenship .
To achieve this objective, the active participation of the entire academic community is essential, in particular students, but also local entities. Therefore, with the development of initiatives in this area, the aim is to increase collective environmental awareness and exercise active citizenship through increased environmental knowledge, improved environmental attitudes and the adoption of more environmentally friendly behaviors.
In order to speed up the implementation of the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) contributing to the achievement of the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the implementation of this program at ESSNorteCVP follows the 7-step methodology, proposed by ABAE ( https ://ecoescolas.abae.pt/sobre/implementar-eco-escolas/ ). The first step in this process was taken on March 29th, with the 1st meeting of the Eco-Schools Council.
This Council includes teaching, non-teaching and student representatives: Pedagogical Council; Council for Quality Assessment; Academic Association; Volunteer Group; and also has representatives from external entities, namely: Environment and Nature Conservation Skills Center of the Municipal Council of Oliveira de Azeméis; Soares de Basto School Group and Ferreira de Castro School Group. This Council meets quarterly to plan and monitor activities adapted to the reality of ESSNorteCVP.
The involvement of all elements and active participation in the identification of environmental issues to be worked on, suggestions and implementation of actions at an environmental level, on the basic themes of water, energy, waste, outdoor spaces and healthy and sustainable food, has been a great contribution to the development of this program at ESSNorteCVP.
