-Contribute to the development of specialized clinical skills in mental health and psychiatric nursing;
-Contribute to the training of nurses with skills for the production and application of advanced scientific knowledge, as well as for autonomous, reflective decision-making based on the best evidence;
-Develop skills that allow nurses to learn throughout life in a self-oriented or autonomous way;
-Developing a unique clinical judgment, through a clinical practice in nursing that is different from other areas of specialty;
-To train the health system of nurses who constitute a critical mass for the definition and implementation of mental health policies at regional, national and international level, in response to current needs in mental health and in the design, execution and evaluation of health projects that aim at the well-being and quality of life related to the mental health of populations;
-Intervene in the promotion of mental health, prevention, diagnosis and intervention in the face of maladjusted or maladaptive human responses to transition processes, generators of suffering, alteration or mental illness.
May apply for the course holders of the following academic qualifications:
a) Holders of a Licensed Degree or legally equivalent qualification in Nursing;
b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree, conferred following a first cycle of studies in Nursing, organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna process by countries adhering to this process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Nursing, recognized in Portugal, under the terms of Decree-Law no. 283/83, of 21 June, Decree-Law no. 341/2007, of 12 October and the Decree-Law n.º 66/2018, of August 16th and which, cumulatively, meet the following additional requirements:
i) Holders of the professional title of nurse;
ii) Have at least 2 years of professional experience as a nurse.
The course promotes the acquisition of skills defined by the Order of Nurses for Specialist Nurses in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, highlighting ethical skills, relational skills and highly complex technical skills.

- Contribute to new knowledge and the development of specialized clinical practice;
-Base your specialized clinical practice on scientific evidence.
