Molecular and Cellular Biology

The teaching methodology will follow an expository and participatory method, focused on the student, integrating the future need of the described contents, allowing a better understanding of them. Case study will be used to allow an active participation of the students in the class, facilitating the comprehension and the importance of this unit into the global aspects of the profession, which will put the goal of learning on needs. The continuous evaluation will comprise two midterm exams with a total value of 100% (50%+50%).

- The diversity of life – characteristics of life and organization of the biological systems;

- Chemical and molecular fundamentals of life;

- Introduction to the cell and its components;

- Biomolecules – proteins, lipids and carbohydrates: concepts, structure and functions;

- Cellular metabolism and energetics;

- Main catabolic and anabolic pathways;

- Cellular organization – biological membranes, cytosol, intracellular organelles, cytoskeletal, and nucleus;

- Cellular interaction and communication – cell junctions, extracellular matrix and signaling pathways.
