Métodos de ensino

The methods used are expositive with active parts whatever the student’s needs justify, allowing a better understanding by the students, with resource of practical exercises.
They will be included whenever considered necessary individual methods of presentation and explanation of the subjects, as well as other methods, such as problem-based learning to acquire specific knowledge. Written examination (two tests) will be used as evaluation method (40%+40%) + Work group (20%).

Objetivos de Unidade Curricular

- To acquire basic knowledge about pharmacology history, as well as the life cycle of the drugs in the human organism.

- To be able to identify the different ways of drug administration, its mechanism of action and possible drug interactions.

- To acquire knowledge about therapeutic drug groups relevant for this course, namely pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, anticoagulants and antidepressants.

- To identify possible problems related with pharmacological therapy, and define possible ways of resolution, using the pharmacological basis of the studied drugs.

- To enable the student to intervene in a multidisciplinary team recognizing the importance of their knowledge and those of other health professionals in the intervention and resolution of clinical cases.

- Introduction to Pharmacology: general concepts, drug regulatory affairs;
- Pharmacovigilance system;
- Drug administration routes and pharmaceutical forms;
- Pharmacokinetics: biological membranes, bioavailability and half-life time;
- Pharmacodynamics: therapeutic and off-target effects, dose-response curve;
- Therapeutic window and security frontiers;
- Drug interactions;
- Self-medication and polymedication;
- Drug information bibliography;
- Central and peripheral nervous system: neurotransmitters, chemical mediators, peptides pharmacology;
- Inflammation pharmacology: mediators of the inflammatory process, steroids and non-steroids anti-inflammatory drugs;
- Pain pharmacology: different types of pain, non-pharmacological therapies, opioid and non-opioid pain killers, local anesthetics;
- Muscular system pharmacology: neuromuscular physiology, pathologies, neuromuscular blockers, central and peripheral muscle relaxants, antispasmodics;
- Hemostasis pharmacology: hemostasis, pathologies, anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs;
- Anxiety and depression pharmacology: anxiety and depression, anxiolytics and antidepressants.
